National Children’s Museum is a world-class institution that aims to spark children’s imaginations and encourage them to dream. Steps off the National Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue, National Children’s Museum celebrates the joy of childhood through science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) exhibits and programs. As the External Affairs Associate, you will help realize this vision for hundreds of thousands of guests each year.

This part-time position will sit on the External Affairs team, the Museum’s department responsible for all brand strategy, marketing, and communications. You will provide critical support toward implementing the Museum’s marketing strategy, contribute to the Museum’s brand through editorial and digital efforts, encourage audience development through research and outreach, and help ensure operational success on the EA team. The Associate position will report to the Communications + Digital Manager

what you’ll do


  • Support the writing and editing of copy for materials, including emails to members and supporters, website, social media, marketing materials, and event materials;
  • Support the content creation strategy for the Museum’s social media accounts;
  • Act as a primary point of contact to the public through the management of several institutional inboxes, providing stellar customer service and ensuring editorial brand standards are maintained across all emails;
  • Support the Museum’s promotional marketing efforts through management of the ticket donation request process;
  • Support audience development strategy execution through lead generation and outreach;
  • Support operations of digital platforms, including the Museum website and email marketing tools;
  • Collect and share data on key performance indicators across departments;
  • Help create efficient systems to manage all External Affairs processes;
  • Occasionally staff Museum outreach programs through brand ambassadorship and communications support;
  • Be knowledgeable regarding Museum exhibits, programs, and services, coordinating fact-finding interviews with other departments as required, and;
  • Other duties as assigned.

important experiences + traits for this role


  • Bachelor’s degree (A degree in one or more relevant fields, including journalism, marketing, communications, and/or museum studies is preferred);
  • 1–3 years of communications experience, which could include internships;
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills, including creative writing, editing, social media, and proofreading;
  • Ability to tailor messaging and adapt tone and voice for diverse audiences, including donors, Museum members, and the general public;
  • Ability to create engaging and creative social media content, manage social media platforms, and track social media results;
  • Prior experience with project management and maintaining attention to detail;
  • Experience with basic photo and video editing using the Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Premiere Pro, etc. a plus);
  • An eye for design with experience in Adobe Illustrator or comparable design tools a plus;
  • Excellent judgment; ability to balance multiple time-critical projects and pivot quickly;
  • Solutions-oriented team player who values a collaborative and fast-paced working environment;
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check.

  • hours + location

    The candidate should be able to commit 20 hours per week in-person Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm, with the potential for infrequent weekend or evening work at institutional events.

  • compensation

    $19.50 per hour, commensurate with experience and skill set.
