National Children’s Museum is a world-class institution dedicated to sparking children’s imaginations and encouraging them to dream big. Located steps off the National Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue, National Children’s Museum celebrates the joy of childhood through playful science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) exhibits and programs. As the External Affairs Coordinator, you will help realize this vision for hundreds of thousands of in-person and virtual visitors who engage with the Museum each year.

National Children’s Museum is looking for short-term graphic design support for a mix of advertising, web/digital, and print design. The contractor should have a strong understanding of the Museum’s brand and the ability to create work that feels cohesive and aligned with existing design. This is a great opportunity for a creative looking to build or expand their portfolio.  

The contractor will report to the Director of External Affairs. National Children’s Museum will provide brand guidelines, all necessary assets, and direction for project completion.

what you’ll do

Work with the External Affairs team to complete design projects that support the institution at large. Larger projects include End of Year Fundraising Appeal Mailer and holiday advertising print and digital graphics;

Create and package ad hoc design and print/web ready files for advertisements, flyers, appeals, invitations, posters, signs, etc;

Communicate with vendors for project specifications and file delivery.

what we believe are important experiences + traits for this role

1-4+ years experience in graphic design;

Experience in Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop;

Experience with out-of-home advertising design;

Ability to meet agreed upon deadlines;

Prior experience with HTML and CSS is a plus.

location

National Children’s Museum at 1300 Pennsylvania Ave NW, as well as at the administrative offices at 1275 Pennsylvania Ave NW. Remote work will be considered.

hours

Hours will take place between 9 am – 5 pm ET and are not to exceed 40 hours a week. Hours are dependent on project need and are not guaranteed each week.

salary

Salary commensurate with experience and demonstrated skills; ranging between $18 -$30/per hour.
