the role
National Children’s Museum is a world-class institution that aims to spark children’s imaginations and encourage them to dream. Steps off the National Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue, National Children’s Museum celebrates the joy of childhood through science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) exhibits and programs. As Exhibits + Facilities Technician, you will help realize this vision for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
As Exhibits + Facilities Technician, reporting to the Senior Manager of Exhibits + Facilities, you will ensure the effective operation and maintenance of the Museum’s exhibits and facilities. Your work will support the mission of the National Children’s Museum to inspire children to care about and change the world–playing a critical role in sparking curiosity and igniting innovation for millions of children in this next generation.
what you’ll do
- Conduct ongoing maintenance, repairs, and improvements to the exhibits and facilities to ensure proper and reliable performance;
- Support exhibits, facilities, and custodial team members to ensure the building is well maintained and kept in excellent condition;
- Maintain documentation of facilities and exhibits operations and maintenance;
- Support the work of building management, external vendors and service providers to ensure the facility is maintained in excellent condition and systems are operating optimally
- Install and strike temporary exhibits, and assists in the prototyping and fabrication of exhibits, props and furniture as required;
- Maintain workshop and facility equipment to ensure satisfactory performance and reliability and keeps work areas clean and organized at all times;
- Support museum staff at all levels to ensure goals of each department are met; ● Contribute to a collaborative and positive working environment.
important experiences + traits for this role
- Proven maintenance and fabrication experience, with a minimum of 2 years experience in design, theater, art or building trades;
- Ability to troubleshoot, repair, and design electrical, mechanical and other complex exhibit components;
- Demonstrated fabrication skills in wood, plastics, laminate, metals and other materials;
- Proficiency in the operation and maintenance of a variety of tools and equipment including common power tools;
- Proficient in the use of Google suite applications for email communication, documentation, and database management;
- Must be detail oriented, with strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently;
- Passion for the mission and values of National Children’s Museum.
physical demands + working environment
- Able to stand, walk, and crouch for extended periods;
- Able to lift 40-60 lbs regularly;
- Occasional work outdoors;
- Able to work in a fast-paced, highly sensory, stimulating work environment due to constant noise and interaction with other staff and visitors, which includes children;
- Punctuality and attendance required;
- Availability on Saturdays, occasional evenings, and occasional holidays.

Part-time position located at the National Children’s Museum at 1300 Pennsylvania Ave NW.
compensation
$25-$30/hour, commensurate with experience and skill set.
