Frida Kahlo Workshop with Follies

2 kids playing with Follies Caza Azul Playset

Learn about Frida Kahlo’s life and art with our toy-builder friends from Follies at 10 am and 2 pm in the Visiting Exhibit Hall.

Together, we’ll build Frida’s house, called Casa Azul, using Follies’ new Playset; we’ll make puppets inspired by the animalitos, or little animals, in Frida’s art; and we’ll draw self portraits, just as Frida did, using our own caballetes, or easels! This workshop is included in the price of Museum admission. Reserve your tickets for September 17.

About Follies

Inspired by Frida Kahlo’s iconic house, this new Playset from Toy-of-the-year-nominated-Follies, and local DC business, features big building shapes that kids connect to create giant structures inspired by Frida’s life and beyond; an easel, a pyramid for her animals, her famous yellow kitchen and of course Casa Azul itself.

Featuring stunning silkscreen prints, Follies is a unique toy that doubles as an art piece. All while teaching kids about Frida through a beautiful poster that features instructions, short stories and playful parent tips. Made from non toxic plastic material, Follies are easy to clean and store flat after kids are done.

About the Designer

Chloe Varelidi is a trained architect, play designer and educator based in Washington, DC. Chloe invented Follies after working for ten years in the intersection of play and learning, launching everything from a public school based on play in New York to a national playful learning program in rural Kenya funded by The Lego Foundation. She is a Washington Award recipient and currently works out of the Fillmore artists studios in North Georgetown, sometimes with the company of her two young kiddos.
