National Children’s Museum is a world-class institution dedicated to sparking children’s imaginations and encouraging them to dream big. The mission of the Museum is to inspire children to care about and change the world. Located at 13th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in downtown DC, the Museum celebrates the joy of childhood through playful science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) exhibits and programs. As the Membership + Advancement Manager, you will help realize this vision for hundreds of thousands of in-person and virtual visitors who engage with the Museum each year.

As Membership + Advancement Manager, you will be a critical member of the Advancement Team. You will manage a robust membership program, support individual and institutional giving, special events, and the annual fund. As a member of the Museum’s Management Team, you will contribute to strategic planning and show dedication to ensuring joyful culture and experience at the Museum. You will serve as an ambassador of the Museum and directly manage an Advancement Coordinator.

what you’ll do

The Membership + Advancement Manager will support the strategy and management of the membership program, as well as drive individual giving through the annual fund and fundraising events. Reporting to the Director of Advancement, you will support institutional giving and help manage government grants. You will be instrumental in supporting the development and implementation of the Museum’s strategic direction and the preparation for the launch of the next campaign or growth plans.

Oversee the development and execution of an annual fund strategy, including digital and mail appeals;

Participate in research for major gifts and solicit gifts from individuals, corporate foundations, private foundations, and government funders;

Oversee the Museum’s individual and corporate membership program through database management, cultivation, stewardship planning, and customer service;

Plan and implement an annual Member Appreciation Week;

Manage an institutional grant calendar and serve as the primary grant and proposal writer;

Plan and implement member and donor communications for advancement that align to the Museum’s overall goals and values, including the Museum’s diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion initiatives;

Partner with the Education and Exhibits team on grant applications and reporting, and work closely with the Operations and Finance team to ensure detailed accounting of grant uses;

Collaborate with the External Affairs team on materials, website, and communications, and work with Operations to ensure database and systems are effective for members;

Assist in management of and as a liaison with the Board Advancement Committee, the Wonder Council, and other Committees and Advisory Committees as needed;

Support membership and corporate membership programs and events;

Contribute to cultivating a positive, passionate culture at the Museum;

Manage and support professional growth for the Advancement Coordinator; and

Serve as a strategic thought partner to the President + CEO.

what we believe are important experiences + traits for this role

3-5 years of fundraising experience, preferably at a cultural institution or other nonprofit, with an understanding of the national cultural and education funding landscape and local philanthropy;

Ability to develop relationships between supporters and identify their passions within the Museum’s mission;

Excellent interpersonal and written communications skills;

Experience working with donor databases and research software, Salesforce and iWave preferred;

Management experience is a plus, but positive and supportive approach to management is required;

Ability to enthusiastically communicate the mission, goals, and programs of National Children’s Museum and articulate the needs for the institution; and

Passion for educating children and the mission of National Children’s Museum.

location

National Children’s Museum at 1300 Pennsylvania Ave NW, as well as at the Administrative Offices at 1275 Pennsylvania Ave NW.

hours

Full-time, 40 hours/week position. Must be available to work at least 4 days per week in person. Participation in special events, evenings, and holidays will be necessary at times.

salary

$60,000 – $75,000, commensurate with experience and skill set.
