As Facilities Custodian, you will help realize this vision for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
As Facilities Custodian, you will ensure the Museum is well maintained and kept in excellent condition. This position is responsible for cleaning offices, common areas, restrooms, and public spaces, including the exhibition galleries. Daily tasks include dusting, emptying waste containers, cleaning glass, cleaning a variety of floor surfaces, and ensuring restrooms are clean and stocked. Weekly and monthly duties include cleaning, dusting, and vacuuming baseboards, ledges, high-reach areas, spot cleaning floors and walls, washing carpet mats, and cleaning other areas as needed. This work will support the mission of National Children’s Museum to inspire children to care about and change the world–playing a critical role in sparking curiosity and igniting innovation for millions of children in this next generation.
what you’ll do
Clean and maintain facilities according to prescribed procedures;
Sweep, mop, scrub, and/or vacuum floors;
Gather and empty garbage;
Restock toilet paper, paper towels, hand soap, and other supplies;
Clean and sanitize sinks, countertops, and restroom fixtures, walls, and ceilings;
Dust furniture, equipment, and Museum exhibits;
Manage supply inventory and assist in reordering and stocking;
Promptly respond to spills and other accidents;
Assist in building security, primarily ensuring doors are secured outside of Museum hours;
Assist with special events, as necessary; and
Other duties as assigned.

High school diploma or equivalent;
2+ years of experience in facilities maintenance, preferably in a commercial building or similar setting;
Basic knowledge of cleaning methods, products, and equipment;
Proven ability to work independently as well as within a team environment;
Independent learner capable of developing skills in new tool usage;
Excellent problem solving and communication skills; and
Passion for the mission and values of National Children’s Museum.
physical demands + working environment
Ability to stand, walk, and crouch for extended periods of time;
Lift and move up to 50 lbs.;
Interact with children and adults in our exhibits, including a three-story climber and slide;
Occasional work outdoors;
Fast-paced, highly sensory, stimulating work environment due to constant noise and interaction with other staff and visitors, which includes children;
Punctuality and attendance required; and
Availability on weekends, evenings, and holidays, as scheduled.
hours + location
Full-time hourly position, located at the National Children’s Museum at 1300 Pennsylvania Ave NW. The position requires regular weekend work. Scheduled work hours will be adjusted according to Museum needs. Occasional special events, evening, and holiday shifts will be required.
salary + benefits
$19-$21 per hour ($39,520 – $43,680), based on experience. This position is eligible for health insurance.
