National Children’s Museum is a world-class institution dedicated to sparking children’s imaginations and encouraging them to dream big. Located steps off the National Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue, National Children’s Museum celebrates the joy of childhood through playful science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) exhibits and programs. As the External Affairs Coordinator, you will help realize this vision for hundreds of thousands of in-person and virtual visitors who engage with the Museum each year.

As External Affairs Coordinator, reporting to the Director of External Affairs, you will be a critical member of the External Affairs Team. You are an enthusiastic brand ambassador, systems support wiz, and a lifelong learner ready to wear many hats. Through frontline communications, event, and administrative support, you will help ensure the success of the Museum’s External Affairs workflow. 

what you’ll do

Act as a primary point of contact to the public through the management of several institutional inboxes, providing stellar customer service and ensuring editorial brand standards are maintained across all emails;

Schedule, manage, and execute promotional outreach experiences (including festivals, expos, community events, etc.);

Support the development of earned revenue opportunities, including group sales requests and scheduling;

Support the daily operations of digital platforms, including the Museum website, gift shop sales software, constituent relationship management system, and email marketing tools;

Support the Museum’s communications efforts as needed, including social media copywriting and scheduling, and overseeing external calendar listings, Museum review pages, and inbound community requests;

Collect and share data on key performance indicators across departments; 

Help create efficient systems to manage all External Affairs processes;

Stay up to date on current trends in the field; and

Support other institutional and strategic projects as needed.

what we believe are important experiences + traits for this role

Bachelor’s degree (A degree in marketing, communications, museum studies, and/or a related field is preferred.);

1–2 years of experience (including internships) in customer service, marketing, communications, public relations, or nonprofit work;

Passion for the mission of National Children’s Museum;

Exceptional interpersonal and written communication skills with a customer service mindset;

Enthusiasm for interacting with the public, including children;

Prior experience with HTML and CSS is a plus;

Prior experience with project management and maintaining attention to detail;

Excellent critical thinking skills; ability to balance multiple time-critical projects and pivot quickly;

Highly organized self-starter who enjoys working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and deadline-driven environment;

Values optimism, excited by the challenges of achieving very ambitious goals, and satisfied by playing a support role; 

Values kindness and supporting colleagues personally and professionally; and

Valid driver’s license, current auto insurance, and reliable personal transportation required

location

National Children’s Museum at 1300 Pennsylvania Ave NW, as well as at the administrative offices at 1275 Pennsylvania Ave NW.

hours

Full-time, 40 hours/week position. The position requires regular weekend work. Must be available to work at least 4 days per week in person. Participation in special events, evenings, and holidays will at times be necessary.

salary

$45,000 – $50,000 commensurate with experience and skillset.
