Steps off the National Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue, National Children’s Museum celebrates the joy of childhood through science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) exhibits and programs. Reporting to the President + CEO, the Director of Exhibits + Education will serve as a critical member of the Leadership Team. You will oversee all exhibitions, education, and visitor experience initiatives throughout the Museum and in the community, leading a broad range of activities related to exhibit design, content development, experience, institutional planning, and visitor engagement.
what you’ll do
The Director of Exhibits + Education will provide exceptional creativity in the development of STEAM learning opportunities, supporting the mission of National Children’s Museum to inspire children to care about and change the world – playing a critical role in sparking curiosity and igniting innovation for millions of children in this next generation.
Lead permanent exhibition design and all content development for National Children’s Museum;
Oversee strategic planning for future exhibitions and temporary exhibit development or rentals;
Provide educational oversight to ensure quality STEAM content throughout exhibitions and exceptional visitor learning experiences;
Develop opportunities to engage all guests in the Museum experience, leading access, inclusion, and diversity initiatives from inception;
Create and manage education programs for Museum guests and opportunities to support the community;
Develop programming and facilitation plans for pop-ups, birthday parties, and other special events;
Ensure a mission-centered approach to visitor engagement and demonstrate a commitment to the Museum’s brand identity being at the core of each experience;
Oversee staff training to ensure high-quality, on-brand customer service for all visitors;
Partner with External Affairs to pursue exhibitions that will maximize content and brand of National Children’s Museum;
Work with Advancement to maximize fundraising opportunities and steward donors;
Staff and manage various Advisory Committees and Board Committees as requested, including the Board Engagement Committee;
Serve as liaison to contractors and consultants working on exhibit and educational space development; and
Provide leadership to Exhibits + Education Team as it grows with National Children’s Museum.
what we believe are important experiences + traits for this role
5+ years working in exhibit development, education, visitor services, experiential marketing, theater, or children’s entertainment;
Demonstrated leadership skills, strong manager with experience financial planning and budgeting;
Tremendous creative talent with capacity to be nimble and adapt to the Museum’s needs;
Ability to work effectively on a team and think strategically;
Expert organizational and project management skills, with proven ability to prioritize and meet deadlines;
Some experience teaching or working with children would be a plus;
Experience managing multiple, complex initiatives through periods of growth and change;
Digital aptitude to effectively oversee integration of ticketing and exhibit infrastructure;
Must be highly professional with the ability to serve as a public representative of the Museum;
Self-starter able to take charge of a task once assigned, but welcoming of feedback from all staff and open to adaptation for the betterment of the Museum; and
Passion for educating children and the mission of National Children’s Museum.
hours and location
Full-time position located at the National Children’s Museum at 1300 Pennsylvania Ave NW. Must be available to work onsite from 9am to 5pm at least four days per week, and remotely one day per week. Occasional travel required.
$90,000 – $110,000 commensurate with experience and skill set.
