Washington DC’s children deserve a world-class museum to spark their imagination and encourage them to dream. Steps off the National Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue, National Children’s Museum celebrates the joy of childhood through science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) exhibits and programs. As Business Manager, you will help realize this vision for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

what you’ll do

As the Museum’s Business Manager, reporting to the Director of Operations and Finance, you will be a critical member of the team. You will help the Museum run more efficiently by managing purchasing, developing financial processes, supporting daily operations and human resources, and building out the private event business line.

Provide timely, complete, and accurate financial reports and data analytics on revenue and expenses to Museum leadership;

Manage monthly accounting processes, payroll processing, invoicing, and financial tracking;

Oversee the Museum general ledger and manage cash flow;

Manage relationships with auditors and contractors supporting Museum financial operations;

Create and maintain forecasts for ticketing, gift shop, and membership revenue;

Operate and evaluate Museum operations software and systems, including Salesforce, Shopify,, and others;

Develop the Museum’s private events strategy and follow it through to implementation and ownership of annual sales targets for events;

Identify new opportunities for earned income;

Partner with Museum leadership to systematize human resources policies and procedures;

Support daily operations during high volume times, including but not limited to working the Museum floor; providing guests with information regarding Museum exhibits, special events, birthday parties, and ticketing information; and opening and closing procedures;

Attend and participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings and trainings; 

Adhere to Museum policies and procedures; and

Welcome other tasks and responsibilities as needed to ensure the Museum’s success.

what we believe are important experiences + traits for this role

Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related business field;

5 years of experience in non-profit or small business financial management;

Comprehensive experience and demonstrated success in developing and maintaining financial systems;

Previous experience navigating ambiguity to identify priorities, set goals, achieve objectives;

Ability to translate data, identify key findings, and communicate them clearly and concisely;

An entrepreneurial spirit and ability to balance short + long-term priorities;

Human resources experience a plus;

Passion for cultivating a team and providing positive leadership to inspire a team of professionals;

Excellent interpersonal and communications skills; and

Passion for the mission of National Children’s Museum.

hours and location

Full-time position located at National Children’s Museum at 1300 Pennsylvania Ave NW. Must be available to work onsite from 9 am to 5 pm at least four days per week, and remotely one day per week. Occasional weekends required. 


$60,000 – $80,000 commensurate with experience and skill set.
