Washington DC’s children deserve a world-class museum to spark their imagination and encourage them to dream. Steps off the National Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue, National Children’s Museum celebrates the joy of childhood through science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) exhibits and programs. The Advancement Manager will help realize this vision for hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.

what you’ll do

As Advancement Manager, reporting to the Director of Advancement, you will be a critical member of the Advancement Team. You will help ensure success for the Museum’s major gifts program, support ongoing fundraising efforts and grant writing, and identify and cultivate new supporters. As a key member of the team, you will play a critical role in inspiring millions of children and visitors for years to come.

Develop a robust major gift program with events and communications to identify and cultivate new donors and steward current donors;

Draft clear and persuasive funding proposals, reports, and other donor materials;

Serve as a spokesperson for the Museum on tours and in the community at events to meet and engage new prospects;

Support logistics and donor outreach for fundraising events, including the annual gala, small major donor prospect cultivation dinners, member events, and other special events; 

Assist the President + CEO with outreach and communications to top donors;

Process timely donor acknowledgements; 

Conduct prospect research (individuals and institutional donors) and prepare other staff as needed for donor meetings and events;

Write fundraising materials to showcase the Museum’s impact such as email and mail appeals and donor letters; and

Support other Advancement-related tasks as needed. 

what we believe are important experiences + traits for this role

Bachelor’s degree required;

Three to five years of relevant experience in fundraising, preferably at a cultural institution;

Passion for relationship building and experience cultivating new relationships;

Excellent writer and editor with the ability to tailor messaging to different audiences;

Previous experience working with and managing prospect research and databases;

Ability to manage large projects while maintaining attention to detail;

Excellent decision-making skills, ability to balance multiple time-critical projects and pivot quickly;

Team player who values a collaborative working environment; and

Passion for the mission of National Children’s Museum. 

hours and location

Full-time position located at the National Children’s Museum @ 1300 Pennsylvania Ave NW. Must be available to work onsite from 9 am to 5 pm at least four days per week, and remotely one day per week. Occasional travel required.
